I am a huge Marvel fan. There are 4 walls in my room, and 3 of them are covered in Marvel merchandise, be it posters, art, or even LEGO. And the 4th wall is all windows, and I was told natural light is more important than more merch. I disagree. I was sad, so I left the flat and went to see this show, instead.

And it was good, it was funny, but it was just a bit too cringey for my tastes. The two performers were really excellent, it just slightly missed the mark. The best jokes, were the borderline ones. The ones that made you go “ooh, this isn’t that family friendly”. But there were only a few, and so I think this show would easily be a 4 or 5 star if they turned up the age rating and put some more risque jokes in there. With that said, I can see, from a business perspective, why you’d want it to be family friendly. A lot of kids love superheroes, and I bet they would have given the show 5 stars. There were kids in the front row who just couldn’t stop laughing, and for that reason, I think that my 3 star rating is a bit harsh, but this is about MY thoughts on the show, so I’m keeping it.

The best sketches revolved around the latest films, including Avengers: Endgame. For that reason, I think most people would enjoy this on a surface level, since everyone and their dog saw that film.
The running gags were excellent – one about Tony Stark’s death, one about Mysterio. There were genuine moments that I cracked up with laughter, but far more where I just cringed too hard! With that said, I love a bit of cringe humour, so most of it wasn’t a problem for me.

There were some clearly improvised moments, and these were some of the highlights – rather than feeling like I was watching actors, I felt like I was watching two likeminded nerds, who genuinely loved and laughed at what they were doing. I can’t wait to see their long form improv.

I therefore recommend this wholeheartedly to ANYONE who loves superheroes. If your children like superheroes, then they’ll love this, and if you, as an adult, likes superheroes, you will find this considerably enjoyable. I wouldn’t rush back to see it again, but I will definitely be checking out their FREE improvised Marvel-themed show.

Verdict: ★★★½

“MARVELus-Awww Snap!” runs at Gilded Balloon Teviot Nightclub (Venue 14) at 18:45 nightly until the end of the Fringe.
